HOW AND WHY DO WRINKLES FORM?

HOW AND WHY DO WRINKLES FORM? Many facial wrinkles form when we use our muscles to make facial expressions. The wrinkles formed during these expressions are called dynamic wrinkles. For example, when we smile our eye wrinkles becomes prominent and when we frown the vertical lines between our eyebrows become noticeable. When we are young, our skin springs back to its initial position after a facial expression. But as we get older, dynamic wrinkles remain on the skin to form static wrinkles; they are the wrinkles and folds that are present when the skin is at rest. This process occurs because natural substances such as collagen (the major natural protein in skin), elastic (the protein that causes tissue to stretch) and Hyaluronic acid (which give skin volume) decrease with age. This together with environmental factors such as exposure to sunlight, smoking and stress all continue to the creation of wrinkles and folds. WHAT IS BOTOX TREATMENT? Botox is a natural, purified protein that relaxes wrinkles causing muscles, creating a rejuvenated appearance. Botox is a prescription only medicine and treatment is only available from qualified medical professional. HOE DOES BOTOX TREATMENT WORK? Botox can be used to relax specific facial muscles that cause dynamic wrinkles (the wrinkles that are formed during facial expressions). Once they are relaxed, you cannot contract them preventing undesirable facial expressions. Thus, the lines gradually smoothen and new lines are prevented from forming. WILL I STILL BE ABLE TO MAKE FACIAL EXPRESSIONS? Although the results are visible, a treatment with Botox will not radically change your facial appearance or make you look as if you have had work done. WHAT DOES BOTOX TREATMENT INVOLVE? Botox treatment is a non-surgical procedure where by a small amount of Botox is administered into selected facial muscles by the doctor using a very fine needle. Generally, a Botox treatment takes around 10-20 minutes. Discomfort is typically minimal and brief, and an anesthetic is usually not required; the injection may sting for a few seconds. Normal activities can be resumed soon after. The dose recommended for the treatment will vary depending on your individual situation and the severity of your lines. Your doctor will know what the best dose is for you and which muscles to inject and give the best results HOW LONG DOES BOTOX TREATMENT LAST? The effect lasts for 4 months before lines slowly begin to return. DOES BOTOX TREATMENT CAUSE MORE WRINKLES TO FORM? Botox will relax the facial muscles that cause expression lines. It prevents wrinkles from forming. If you choose not to have further Botox treatment your muscles will eventually return to normal activity and your wrinkles will gradually revert to their pre-treatment levels. HOW QUICKLY CAN I SEE A DIFFERENCE? Within 3 days you may notice a softening in the appearance of your lines and it takes up to 7 days to see the full results. CAN BOTOX TREATMENT BE COMBINED WITH OTHER PRODUCTS AND PROCEDURES? Many people use a combination of cosmetic products and procedure with Botox. Your doctor will advice you as to whether or not you will receive better results with your Botox treatment if combined with other products and/ or procedures. ARE THERE ANY SIDE EFFECTS? In the amount used for the treatment of facial lines, the side effects are usually temporary and localized to the area of the injection. BEFORE TREATMENT: Avoid taking Aspirin, Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as Ibuprofen, Paracetamol, vitamin E, Ginseng, green tea, and gingko biloba 2-3 days prior to the procedure, as these drugs may cause excessive bleeding or bruising. POST TREATMENT: Do not rub or manipulate the injected area Do exercise the injected muscle for 30 minutes after the procedure Do not lie down or bend forward for 4 hours after the procedure. Avoid facials or face massage for 2 days Cold compress may be done to reduce the redness and swelling, if any. PLEASE NOTE: Do inform your doctor if you have any existing medical conditions.

Chemical exfoliation is a proc

Chemical exfoliation is a procedure where a chemical acidic agent of defined strength is applied to the skin to cause a controlled mild reaction up to a desired depth. The healing process which follows causes increased turnover of epidermal cells called keratinocytes, and stimulates the fibroblasts in the dermis to produce new collagen. These two effects lead to reduction of pigmentation due to rapid shedding of epidermal keratinocytes [called exfoliation], improvement of skin texture, colour, reduction of scars, improving the firmness of the skin and smoothening of fine wrinkles. The depth of penetration and the destruction of upper layers of the skin caused by the peel depends on the composition of the chemical, concentration and the duration of time the peel is applied. The depth of penetration also depends on the thickness of the skin, especially the outermost dead horny layer and amount of sebum (oil secretion) on the skin. Clients with thinner skin are usually more sensitive to peels. The benefits that are desired can be obtained by varying the composition of the peel, modifying the concentration of the chemical, and controlling the duration of exposure when the peel is applied. The benefits of chemical peels can be enhanced by using therapeutic skin medication to enhance a desired effect, and internal remedies to improve the integrity of the skin. Application of a peel causes “burn” effect which causes mild redness of the skin. This redness subsides in a few hours or up to a day. During this time, the patient must avoid exposure to direct sunlight. This can restrict the patient’s outdoor movement. This period is called “downtime”. Depending on the depth of penetration, peels are grouped as superficial, medium or strong peels. The doctor may advise the number of sessions (5-8) based on the skin type. The treatment is performed with a gap of 15 days between 2 sessions. Maintenance sessions can be taken every 30 days or as needed. HOW DOES A CHEMICAL EXFOLIATION TREATMENT HELP: Smoothens fine lines and wrinkles Removes dead skin cell layers Smoothens rough texture Improves appearance of open pores Helps in treatment of active acne lesions Reduces ingrown hairs Enhances the effect of homecare regimen by improving the penetration of active ingredients Improves skin texture and colour Reduces scars and pigmentation caused by acne Improves the firmness of the skin. Gives a healthy, refreshed, firm and lustrous appearance to the skin. POST TREATMENT CARE: Proper care of the skin after the treatment is very important to speed healing, prevent infection and avoid colour changes in the treated area caused by sun exposure. Proper skin care after a peel involves: Avoid face wash/ soap/hot water for 24 hrs after treatment Cleansing the skin with the cold water or prescribed mild cleanser Use moisturizer after face wash and as directed by the doctor Avoid any direct sun exposure Use of sunscreen is mandatory and has to be re-applied after every 3-4 hrs. To use a physical block like umbrella or cap along with the sunscreen when outdoors for the duration of treatment. No sauna /steam or swimming for 7 days after the procedure No strenuous exercising for 2 days after the procedure. Any exfoliation and bleach on face should not be taken during the period of peel execution. Any other facial service to be taken in consent with the doctor Post Peels maintenance program can be taken after the treatment as per the doctor’s suggestions. Do not massage or rub the skin vigorously Do not use make up for 24 hours after the treatment Follow the advice given to you by your treating doctor. PLEASE NOTE: With a superficial depth peel treatment, there may be mild dryness and flaking of the skin post treatment. This is a normal process. With a deeper peel, the dryness and skin peeling may be more pronounced and can last upto a week. All recommended home care products may be continued as per the doctor’s advise.
